Haplea picks up first offer

Annandale (N.J.) North Hunterdon Regional tight end Kevin Haplea attended a junior day over the weekend and dropped off some film with the coaches that were showing him around.

The 6-foot-4, 229-pound junior was at Pitt and came away impressed with all that he saw. He was even more excited yesterday when the coaches informed him that they were extending an offer -- his first of the recruiting process thus far.

"(Pitt's) Junior Day was Saturday and I was up there then," Haplea explained. "It was pretty good. It was my first time ever up there so I was pretty excited to be there. We saw the basketball game and that was obviously really good. We had a lot of one on one time with the coaches.

"I dropped off my tape when I got there Saturday, and then I e-mailed them Sunday morning telling them thanks and that I would keep in touch.

"I got in touch with coach (Jeff) Hafley, who recruits New Jersey. He said it was good to have me there, and that he had watched the tape and was impressed. He said he was going to show it to coach Wannstedt. Then I got another e-mail from him around 4 p.m. asking me to give him a call. To make a long story short, he just told me they had decided to offer me."

Where does that put the Panthers on his list?

"I don't want to say that I'm obligated to have them at number one because of the offer, because I really do like it there. Pittsburgh is a nice city and a good sports down. I'm excited to get back up there so I can see more of the campus and learn more about everything.

"I have a pretty broad range of schools that I've been in contact with. Some of the schools I've been in touch with the most are Penn State, -- I'm going out there for a visit soon -- Rutgers, Maryland, NC State, Virginia and UConn. I'm going out to UConn on (February) 28 for their Junior Day. There are just a whole bunch of them that I'm in touch with."
