Insider Report: Off-season key for receivers

Off-season will be key for young receivers (By Gene Williams, Warchant.com)

If there's a question mark on offense entering the 2009 season it will be at wide receiver. With the departures of starters Greg Carr and Preston Parker, the injury to Taiwan Easterling, Corey Surrency likely losing his battle with the NCAA, and Rod Owens' suspension, there is a lot of youth and a lot of holes to fill on Lawrence Dawsey's unit.

In addition to veteran Richard Goodman, younger receivers like Jarmon Fortson, Bert Reed and Avis Commack will be counted on heavily to fill a huge void at the position.

Over the final week of spring practice, all three rising sophomore have made huge strides. Fortson had the big play for the offense in the spring game with his 65-yard touchdown reception and had another multiple catch day in Monday's half scrimmage, Reed has scored touchdowns in consecutive scrimmages, and Avis Commack, who struggled earlier in the spring, has also recorded touchdowns in each of the last two scrimmages.
