Oklahoma TE Picks Up Offer he was Waiting For

Six months ago there weren't more than a handful of people who knew Austin Haywood's name. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound tight end had just transferred from Anadarko to Moore (Okla.) Southmoore with little fanfare or notoriety. Just a few months later Sooner fans who made the trip to see the upstart Oklahoma City program were starting a grassroots campaign to help the Sooners take notice of the skilled two-way player.

It seems the fans tireless work, whether directly or of no relation, finally was more than the Sooner coaching staff could ignore.

As such, head coach Bob Stoops, offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson, quarterbacks coach Josh Heupel, and defensive backs coach Bobby Jack Wright all made their way to Moore last Friday night to watch Haywood, Sooner commitment Julian Wilson, and 2011 star quarterback and Sooner legacy Kendal Thompson.

"I was nervous the whole week when I found out they were coming, I was working to make sure I got things right in the game," Haywood said of a game in which he would eventually score five touchdowns.

"I grew up watching them play and my whole family is Oklahoma fans, so it meant a lot."
