Keels picks up first offer from SDSU
San Diego Mission Bay's Mahbu Keels said Wednesday that he has picked up his first scholarship offer when San Diego State contacted him at school after speaking with wide receivers coach LeCharls McDaniel, his primary recruiter.
"I'm really happy to have my first offer on the table," Keels said.
Keels is a 6-foot-1, 170-pound wide receiver/cornerback that the Aztecs are recruiting as a cornerback. Mission Bay coach Willie Matson says Keels is the team's fastest player with sub 4.5-second speed for 40 yards. The speed and height are a rare combination for a cornerback.
Keels plans to make an unofficial visit this weekend when SDSU plays Texas Christian. He earlier made unofficial visits to practice and to a game the week of the New Mexico State contest.
Keels said Fresno State called him two days ago, and he hopes to make a visit to the Bulldogs. He also has letters from Oregon, Colorado and Colorado State.
SDSU has been recruiting him for several weeks, and Keels made unofficial visits to practice and a game the week of the Oct. 17 New Mexico State contest. It may be that a scholarship opened up this week when Berkeley (Calif.) High running back Rickey Galvin, who had an offer from SDSU, announced an verbal commitment to attend Washington State. Keels' offer came less than 24 hours later.
"Right now, it's between San Diego State and Fresno State," Keels said. "I'm waiting to hear from Fresno State and to see how much I like San Diego State. It could be anytime if my mom (Sherele) and I feel it's the right place."
Keels, a self-proclaimed late bloomer who is unranked by Rivals.com, said his growth over the summer in addition to not attending summer camps when players are evaluated led to him being below the radar on the recruiting circuit.
He was only a 5-11, 160 as a junior before his growth spurt, but Mission Bay teammate Dillon Baxter, a four-star running back committed to USC, says Keels has always been a good athlete since he's known him dating back to their Pop Warner days.
