Hokies in the picture for 2011 in-state star

With just a few offers left, Virginia Tech continues to keep an eye on an-state star. The prospect has taken a visit to campus this season for a game and has the Hokies in the picture. What is his status with Tech now?

"He's having a great season," Harrisonburg, Va. head coach Tim Sarver said of running back Michael Holmes. "He was district player of the year. He ran for 2,100-yards and average nine something per carry. He also had 29 touchdowns. We're going into the playoffs this week, we had a bye over the weekend."

Sarver doesn't believe Holmes will be able to top his record setting season from a year ago, but continues to be impressed by his star tailback's play.

"He's not quite on track, but he's over 2,000-yards," he said. "I think this year he's been consistent. When you reach that level, that's an improvement. He has certainly done the job for us, we depend on him and he is the one that has carried us this far. I can say, he's one of the best that's ever played here, arguably the best."

A second consecutive big season has the Hokies continued interest.

"Virginia Tech is still interested," he said. "They have offered him a scholarship and he has been on an unofficial visit to Tech along with James Madison, Marshall and Virginia. Those are the only four he has visited. It appears he wants to stay in the area."

Tech and James Madison appear to be standing out.

"At this point he's trying to decide, he's looking at both Virginia Tech and James Madison," Sarver said. "Virginia Tech has done a good job trying to keep him interested. They have told him what their plans are he's interested in them.

"James Madison likes him and he likes them. We go to camp there so he's got an inside thing and some close ties there. They are right next door."

In terms of a decision, it may not be far off.

"He'll make a decision right after football."

Holmes and Harrisonburg will host Staunton River in the playoffs this week.
