Recruiting 2012: A look ahead offense

Michigan State signed 21 players yesterday.

Looking at the current roster the Spartans should be very close to the 85 man scholarship limit come this fall. Coach Dantonio may reward a few scholarships to walk-ons. Scholarships are year to years so in order to stay on scholarship they will need to stay in the two deeps.

The Spartans will have 13 seniors on scholarship next year, which means that they will not be signing a large "SEC style" class in 2012. With normal attrition and injury departure, I expect the number to be around 18-19 scholarships available.

How will those scholarships break down? SpartanMag.com takes a look today at the offensvie side of the ball.

With the departure of Joe Boisture the Spartans will only have 3 quarterbacks on scholarship. That means that this position will be a top priority for Coach Dantonio and his staff. In reality, it might not be a bad idea to sign two quarterbacks foe this class as the Spartans will graduate both Cousins and Nichol. The general rule of thumb is you want a quarterback in every class. As of right now the Spartans do not have a quarterback in the junior class or RSFr class.

Projected #: 1 possibly 2

Running Back:

The Spartans only signed 1 player in eth class of 2011 that projects as a running back, Onaje Miller. This position will be important for the class of 2012. It is not out of the realm of possibility that Edwin Baker could leave early for the NFL if he has another big year and Larry Caper will also be a junior. The Spartans need to sign a blue-chip stud running back for the class. Someone in the mold of a Baker or Javon Ringer type.

    Wide receiver:

Usually you like to sign as many players as you lose and the Spartans will graduate 3 starting wideouts in B.J Cunningham, Keshawn Martin and Keith Nichol. With that said, I think the staff will settle on bring in 2 players at this position. . If you only bring in two, you want to make sure the two are special players. The good news is that the state of Michigan may have 1 or 2 players that qualify as just that.

    Tight end:

History tells us that the Spartans will sign at least one tight end every year and look for that to be the case again in 2012. The Spartans will graduate Brian Linthicum and Garret Celek after this year so they will lose two tight ends. However, there are a few other players on the roster that have tight end ability if necessary, so we look for 1 to be the moist likely number as long as Dion Sims is able to return.

    Offensive line:

Usually teams like to carry around 15 offensive line prospect on scholarship. Even with the graduation of Joel Foreman and Jared McGaha the Spartans will likely be over this number. In addition, it is possible that one of the defensive linemen signed in the class of 2012 could eventually matriculate to the OL. It is not often that you take a "small" OL class, but Michigan State may be in a position to do just that. By small I would say at minimum 2 maximum 3.
