In a conference as physical the Big Ten, defensive tackle recruiting is always a priority. One of the players the Michigan state staff is actively recruiting for the class of 2012 is Ondre Pipkins of Park Hill High School in Kansas City, Missouri. caught up with the 6foot-3, 320-pound prospect and has the latest on his recruitment.

As reported in the past, Pipkins has strong ties to the State of Michigan. In addition to growing up in the Saginaw are, he also attended Rochester Adams High School before moving down the Missouri.

With the spring evaluation period now occurring, asked Pipkins how recruiting is going.

"It is going really well," he stated. "College coaches have been coming by the school. I have 9 scholarships right now."

The list of schools that have offered Pipkins a scholarship is an impressive one. In addition to Michigan State, Pipkins holds offers from school such as Iowa, Michigan, Missouri and Tennessee. asked Pipkins what he is hearing from Michigan State and if he currently knows any of the players in East Lansing.

"Yes, I speak with Coach Salem. He keeps telling me they want me up there. It would be great to come home and play for one of my dream schools. I hope to come up this summer if I can fit it into my schedule. I know Jordan Sanders and Draymond Green."

Many know that Green made a surprise appearance in the Green and White game, however Sanders is the more intriguing story Sanders, who is a preferred walk-on defensive tackle, has been making some noise as of late. He got some good reviews from the staff and his teammates coming out of spring practice.

Pipkins went on to inform that he is not in a hurry to make his college choice and he does have a good idea about what he is looking for in a school.

"I plan on taking a few official visits he stated. "I want to go to a place that has a strong business administration school and a great environment for football. I also want to be at a place that will make me a better person player and athlete."

Pipkins indicated that he will be attending the Ohio State NIKE camp that will be held later this month. will be covering that event and will be sure to report on his performance and have any additional news on his recruitment.

Matt Dorsey's Take:

At his size, Pipkins is the type of player the staff envisions could step in and take over for Anthony Rashad White. The Spartans like having a massive player in the middle that demands a double-team, that allows edge-rushers to get single attention on the outside.

With both Jerel Worthy and Rashad White set to graduate the same year, having a player like Pipkins ready to step in would be optimal. The Spartans are likely looking to sign 2 defensive tackles for the class of 2012.
