Pipkins Forced to Change Top 5 Plans

For some time it looked as though Oklahoma was considering taking a pass on potential class of 2012 signings at the defensive tackle position but as position coach Jackie Shipp has hit the road it seems less and less likely to take place. With the Sooners identifying several top-flight interior linemen in recent weeks one that they saw some time ago, Kansas City (Mo.) Park Hill standout Ondre Pipkins, apparently wasn't forgotten.

It's an interesting use of words as at one point during the early spring Pipkins had written off Oklahoma as a real possibility.

The Sooners had expressed interest in the 6-foot-3, 325-pound run-stuffer last fall when then Sooner offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson went by Park Hill during his usual recruiting rounds of the region. However after Wilson took the head coaching job at Indiana the Sooners had trouble filling the void in the area.

As Pipkins' recruiting interest began to soar the Sooners apparently realized the oversight and Jackie Shipp went by Park Hill in early May to check on the big defensive tackle.

"It was May when coach Shipp came in. I eventually found out that the coach that had been recruiting me before had taken a job at Indiana, then I understood why I hadn't heard from them in some time," Pipkins explained. "Coach Shipp still knew who I was and came up just to see me. I guess there was some speculation that I was 6-foot-1 or so and he told my coach he mainly came by to check on that. He said I passed the eye ball test."
