Mississippi State has had some historic games in recent years serving as the first Southeastern Conference program to travel to Louisiana Tech and Middle Tennessee State as well as the first SEC school to play a SWAC opponent.
Today will mark another milestone as the Bulldogs will again represent their conference becoming the first to visit Troy's Veterans Memorial Stadium at 6 p.m.
However it will not be the first time the two teams have met on the gridiron. The series is split at a game apiece as the Trojans claimed a 21-9 victory in Starkville in 2001 during Troy's first season as an FBS school.
The Bulldogs were able to bounce back the following year to even things up with an 11-8 win at Davis Wade Stadium. During that contest, State rolled up 328 yards on offense and took advantage of six Trojan interceptions. Fred Reid scored the game's only touchdown on a 15-yard pass from Kevin Fant.
This year Dan Mullen's Bulldogs are off to a 2-0 start and have won four straight dating back to last season. Mississippi State had an opening week win over Jackson State and defeated Auburn 28-10 last weekend. Tyler Russell threw for 222 yards and three touchdowns en route to an SEC Offensive Player of the Week honor and led the offense to 388 total yards.
