Phillips talking Mississippi State
It has already been a long year for Kentucky's Joker Phillips and we are only five weeks into the season.
The Wildcats are just 1-4 and have a depleted depth chart due to injuries. Things do not get any easier this week as UK prepares to take on their third consecutive ranked SEC opponent in No. 19 Mississippi State.
"We're a little banged up," Phillips said. "We lost our quarterback this week to ankle surgery. Our starting tailback Coshik Williams is out for the year and we lost our backup strong safety with an ACL."
Phillips will go with a pair of true freshmen under center in Saturday's game against the Bulldogs. Jalen Whitlow has appeared in three games completing 13-of-29 passing for 126 yards and two interceptions while former four-star and Kentucky Gatorade Player of the Year Patrick Towles has yet to play.
"We'll have to give them big enough packages to offset some of the things that they will do defensively," Phillips said. "It hard to give one of these quarterbacks our total package. I don't think we'll have as much in as we did for Maxwell Smith, who was playing at a high level when we lost him. We only had him for one of the SEC games. You have to give (the freshmen) enough but not too much where you complicate things for them."
The third year head coach has not announced which freshman will start the game but plans on using both throughout the course of the game.
