First-years seizing the moment

With a trip to Madison Square Garden on the line in the NIT Season Tip-Off in November, there's really no way to get around the fact that Virginia faltered. The Cavaliers shot 4 of 21 (19 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc and were out rebounded 59 to 53 by Delaware, which not only went on to win 59-53 but likely had a lot to do with keeping UVa out of the NCAA Tournament.

The Wahoos are still trying to get to the Garden and some 134 days later, they will have another chance. This time, it's the postseason NIT and the foe isn't (thankfully for UVa fans) from the CAA. No. 3-seed Iowa (23-12) will travel to Charlottesville on Wednesday night (7 p.m., ESPN2), where No. 1-seed Virginia has won a school-record 20 home games this season, 19 of them in a row (a John Paul Jones Arena record).

At 23-11, the Wahoos have won more games this season than any since 1994-1995 and once again have a shot at earning a trip to MSG.
