No. 2 QB spot suddenly a two-horse race

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.--The race to see which horse will back up Freshman All-American honorable mention Pat White at WVU quarterback has suddenly dwindled to two, according to Mountaineer head coach Rich Rodriguez.

Making a stop here as part of the winding Mountaineer Athletic Club Caravan, Rod confirmed Thursday afternoon that he and his staff were helping former All-Virginia redshirt T.J. Mitchell transfer to another school this summer. The head coach also mentioned that former starting QB Adam Bednarik underwent successful (throwing) shoulder surgery on Wednesday.

"It was the rotator cuff again. He had the surgery yesterday, but I haven't talked with him or the doctors yet. I am going back to Morgantown today, and that's one of the things I have to find out," Rod said.

Bednarik had similar surgery in the off-season of 2005, but started the first handful of games for the Sugar Bowl Champion Mountaineers until giving way to White. He also suffered several other injuries through the mid-portion of the campaign.

With Big Bed having undergone surgery in mid-May, whether he will be able to recover and rehab the joint before the first week of August, when fall ball opens, is speculative at best.

One of those who will not get a chance at the understudy's job is Mitchell, who though he was superlative in the spring Gold- Blue game, has decided to transfer out.
