Bulldogs looking for next big hitter

Last fall, Greg Blue was able to put a lot of fears to rest when he more than successfully replaced Thomas Davis at free safety on the way delivering plenty of bone-crushing hits that helped him earn All-American honors.


Now, the process of finding another big hitter at safety has started over with junior Kelin Johnson being the front-runner to start at free safety with sophomore C.J. Byrd and redshirt freshman Donovan Baldwin also competing for time at both safety positions.


"I like our safeties, I worry that they are not the big physical hitters that Blue was and that Thomas Davis was and Sean Jones," Georgia head coach Mark Richt said at a recent Bulldog Club meeting.


Over at rover, a position known to others as strong safety, senior Tra Battle is the clear leader to start. Three others could also figure into the mix in the fall in addition to Byrd and Baldwin. Redshirt freshman Antavious Coates is finally returning from the injured list after missing all of last year with a knee injury. Two freshmen, Reshad Jones and Quintin Banks will arrive on campus this summer.
