Garvin providing major boost to track team

Florida State sprints coach Ken Harnden knew all along that the track team's push for a national title would need a little boost from the football program. He just never figured it would be freshman cornerback Michael Ray Garvin providing the help.

Heading into the track season, Harnden had sophomore receiver Kenny O'Neal penciled in as one of the key players in FSU's sprints group. But with
O'Neal off the track this season, it's been Garvin who has provided a
stabilizing force to the team.

"Michael Ray has done an amazing job," Harnden said. "He works really
hard. He's always at practice, always excited to be there. He's young and he
's got that energy that a lot of the older guys feed off of."

It's more than energy that Garvin has brought to the track program.

Thanks to a fourth-place finish at last weekend's NCAA East regional,
Garvin qualified for next week's NCAA championship meet in the 200 meters.
He will also run a leg on FSU's 4x100 meter relay team that is ranked second
in the country.

Garvin filled the spot on that relay team when O'Neal decided against
competing midway through the outdoor season so he could concentrate on
academics.
