Five freshmen held out of Thursday practice

Thursday night's practice was one of the most solid outings the team has had during all of fall camp. The defense looked consistent all the way down to the third string, and Tuitama was nearly perfect. Here are some notes from the practice, starting with a bit of bad news.

  • Devin Ross, D'Aundre Reed, Derke Robinson, Cory Elmore and Terrell Reese were held out of practice on Thursday due to NCAA Clearinghouse issues. After practice, Mike Stoops did not place a timetable on their returns but they will not be allowed to participate in any team activities until they are fully cleared.

  • Earl Mitchell looked absolutely amazing out there. He opened up holes on the defensive line more consistently than any other fullback on Thursday and he has made a complete 180 in his pass catching ability over the past week.

His effort on Thursday impressed the coaches enough to the point where there is a good chance he will be the number one fullback in Saturday's scrimmage.

  • Willie Tuitama looked nearly perfect on Thursday. He found Mitchell, Mike Thomas and Travis Bell for touchdowns. Tuitama was "nearly" perfect because he threw an interception to safety Dominic Patrick.
