Sources: Oklahoma wants crack at Keller
Sam Keller is one of the hottest names in college football heading into the 2006 season. Keller is receiving all this attention because he's a rarity in college football. He's a great college quarterback without a team.
Keller began the 2005 season as Arizona State's starting quarterback, and not only was he a productive player, he was one of the finest players in the Pac-10 conference. Keller was one of the national leaders in passing yards and touchdown passes through the first seven games of the season.
In those contests he threw for 2,165 yards and 20 touchdowns.
But a thumb injury against Oregon on Oct. 8th ended Keller's season. And redshirt freshman Rudy Carpenter stepped in to put up even bigger numbers to finish the season.
When decision time came this fall to name a starter, Arizona State Head Coach Dirk Koetter named Keller his starting quarterback. Then he changed his mind a day later and gave the job to Carpenter.
"It's simple. I made a mistake on the quarterback situation and I'm changing my mind," Koetter said after the Sun Devil's practice on Sunday. "We're going to start Rudy Carpenter. I've excused Sam Keller from practice to consider his options."
