Omaha North features two solid underclassmen
OMAHA, Neb. - Just over two years ago, Omaha (Neb.) North head coach Larry Martin emailed Rivals.com about a group of sophomore athletes that he felt were all legitimate Division I prospects.
Martin said at the time Phillip Bates was the starting junior varsity quarterback, but his staff knew he was big time. The other player Martin wanted us to look at was Niles Paul, who moved to Nebraska from Virginia for his sophomore season.
After it was all said and done, Paul and Bates were the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked prospects in the state of Nebraska for the signing class of 2007. Bates will go on to Iowa State to play for first year head coach Gene Chizik and Paul will start his career at Nebraska as the most high profile in-state recruit since Heisman Trophy winner Eric Crouch.
It will be hard for Martin to ever have another Bates and Paul tandem, but North's 2007 squad features at least two potential Division I prospects for the classes of 2009 and 2010.
