Evans steps up in scrimmage

Linebacker Chris Evans knew he would get plenty of reps in Auburn's first scrimmage Saturday but he never expected to play almost all 112 plays.

But when starting middle linebacker Merrill Johnson left early with a calf injury, the AU defense needed someone to step up. And Evans was right there to lead the defense with 11 tackles and deliver many of the morning's biggest hits.

"Chris really showed up," said AU defensive coordinator Will Muschamp. "We recognized him to the group when it was over with. He's a guy that maximizes his ability and does everything you ask - plays hard, plays physical. He's a kid that's a lot of fun to coach."
