Backfield in Motion

Nick Saban's first round of spring drills at Alabama will get underway on March 24, and a stretch of 15 workouts will close with the Crimson Tide's annual A-Day game at Bryant-Denny Stadium on April 21. BOL sets the table by providing its readers with a spring prospectus. We continue our spring preview by taking a look at the running back positions.

Position coach: Burton Burns, first year at Alabama.

Leading candidates: Tailback: 10 Jimmy Johns (Jr., 6'2, 227); 29 Terry Grant (rFr., 5'9, 184); 5 Roy Upchurch (So., 6'0, 191); 38 Glen Coffee (So., 6'2, 225); 26 Ali Sharrief (So., 5'9, 212). Fullback: 40 Baron Huber (So., 6'4, 252).

Next in line: Tailback: Jamar Taylor (Fr., 5'9, 204); Fullback: 91 Will Denniston (Sr., 6'3, 216); 30 Patrick Hanrahan (rFr., 6'0, 245); 44 Jacob Vane (rFr., 6'0, 235).

2007 signees: Demetrius Goode (5'11, 200, LaGrange, Ga.); Marquis Maze (5'8, 160, Birmingham, Ala.); Jeramie Griffin (6'0, 230, Batesville, Miss.); Jamar Taylor (Lakeland, Fla.).

2006 returning leaders: Rushing: Johns carried 66 times for 293 yards and one touchdown. Receiving: Johns caught one pass for 16 yards.
