The home stretch

Colt McCoy continues to impress as the team's top quarterback, but the big question on who will lock down the back-up job is a long way from being answered.

Both Sherrod Harris and John Chiles have shown flashes this spring, but Davis said neither guy has separated from the other and the staff goes back and forth on who should sit second on the depth chart. Don't expect things to change by the time spring drills wrap up this weekend, but Davis said he's hoping the two guys will make strides in the off-season, just as McCoy and Jevan Snead did last year.

"One day we'll go in the meeting room and say if we played today, it would be Sherrod. Then the next day we'll go in and say if we played today, it would be John," Davis said. "The truth is, we don't know. I wish it wasn't the truth, but that is the truth right now. At this time last year I didn't know who the starter was going to be. I'd rather be unsure about the number two guy is going to be.

"When our kids came back last August, they had transformed. They were different guys. I would anticipate both Sherrod and John will have really good summers and they'll be much more comfortable when we start back.

"But I don't think there will be anything drastic happen between now and the end of spring. Then hopefully they'll start separating in the summer by working and studying film and then we'll see."
