Linebacker Tavares Gooden took last season's subpar results hard.

"Anything less than undefeated for us is a failure," Gooden said. "That's the goal. In college football you go 100 percent. We want to be in the big game. That's why everyone comes here, to play in the big show. That's our goal this year, to reach 100 percent. If you give 100 percent you'll win. This year everybody, coach [Randy] Shannon, he knows our intensity, how we like to play. He'll match our intensity as a coach. He's a young guy, so he'll run around, jump around with us. We'll have fun this season."

Overall can this defense be better than last year's record-breaking unit?
