Torain Media Day quotes

As a first-year Sun Devil post-transfer from the JUCO ranks last season, Ryan Torain rushed for 1,229 yards, the most by any player in the program since Freddie Williams in the undefeated 1975 season. A second-team all-conference performer, Torain is expected to be a team leader in this, his senior campaign. Here are some of his Media Day comments.

On how he feels going into this season:

"A lot more comfortable. I feel like I've got a lot more confidence, I've got a lot more experience. Coming from JUCO to the D1 level everyone says it hits harder, it's a lot faster and it's true but you've just got to elevate your game and be ready for whatever comes."

On the state of the team:

"I feel like we've got a lot more leaders. Some lead by verbal, some lead by example. We've got a lot more leaders. I like to lead by example."

On running behind a veteran offensive line:

"I'm excited. Hopefully everybody stays healthy. It's going to be a great season. We've got a lot of guys with experience coming back and it's going to be fine."

On changes with Rudy Carpenter from last year to this year:

"He's more of a leader. I feel he's gotten stronger as a leader. He voices his opinion more. Over the summer he was the guy everybody went to to ask questions. He stepped up to the plate and handled it really well. I'm happy for him."

On the depth and talent at running back:

"We're all pushing each other. Everybody's pushing each other. We all want to play, we all want to make plays. We all want to see the field. It's going to be fun. We're all going to make each other better."

On Dennis Erickson:

"I feel like he is a players' coach. If a guy is having problems with something he'll talk to him, he'll sit 'em down and just work with him. I think he's a great guy."

On running backs coach Jamie Christian:

"He's played the position. He knows what he's talking about and he's been at the NFL level. That speaks for itself. If you've played the position and you coached at the highest level you've got the experience, you've been there. You know what the running back is going through on the field."

On goals for the season:

"I always want to get over 1,000 (yards). Of course I'm going to bump my goal up a little bit more than I did last year. So yeah, I have goals but I always want to have a great season. The number one goal is to go to the Rose Bowl and win games. That's the goal."

On his status as a top pro running back prospect (projected):

"I really don't think about it. I just think about the season. I can't go to the NFL if I don't have a great season. I'm going to keep working and stay in the present right now and whatever comes in the future comes."

On the balance between passing and rushing offense:

"To be honest I feel like the receivers have been working their tail off. I think we'll catch (teams) off guard. I feel we'll do well with our receiving corps."
