NU Notes: Purify was pushed hard by his teammates

The summer of 2007 was not an easy one for senior Nebraska wide receiver Maurice Purify. On top of the legal issues Purify battled, the 6-foot-4, 224 pound Purify wasn't allowed to take part in summer conditioning with his teammates.

This made for some tough times for Purify, but luckily for him he had several of his Husker teammates to bring him back up. Purify said multiple members of the team worked out with him each day at the campus recreation center just to make sure he was staying on task.

"A lot of guys came up to the (campus recreation center) and worked with me," Purify said. "Lydon Murtha came and worked out with me, Carl Nicks did, Armando Murillo came out and played corner for me pretty much every day I was there. Sam Keller threw to me twice a week. Nate Swift and Terrence Nunn came out as well."

However, even though Purify worked out with his teammates on his own for most of the summer, wide receivers coach Ted Gilmore said Purify is still nowhere near the kind of shape he wants him in for the 2007 season.

"He's got a ways to go and he knows that," Gilmore said. "He needs to use this entire month to get himself back into game shape."

And for Purify, he completely understands this and he knows that he has to earn his spot back before he jumps back into the starting line-up again.

"I have to make plays," Purify said. "I feel bad about what I did and know I have to earn my spot back."
