Q&A: Deon Murphy

It didn't take long for Deon Murphy to make an impact during the first open training camp practice by Kansas State last Saturday in Olathe. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound junior college transfer made a nice reception across the middle and then returned a punt for a touchdown. Murphy, a late arrival for training camp, discussed his road to joining the Wildcats and his goals for the fall with D. Scott Fritchen.

D. Scott Fritchen: You arrived in Manhattan last Sunday. What has the process been like since you've been working out with the team in camp?

Deon Murphy: I've just been going hard every day, working hard every day, trying to get my game to the next level and I've been going by the coaches' procedures and have been getting everything done. I came a couple days late, so I'm trying to get back on track and get where I need to be.

DSF: You had been finishing up summer junior college coursework. What was that like knowing that you were missing camp?

DM: I was just trying to finish up what I needed to in order to get here. It was an on-line class not through Coffeyville but through another junior college that I needed in order to graduate from Coffeyville. I got that grade, graduated and I'm here now.

DSF: What was your first focus when you arrived in Manhattan?

DM: I did the shuttle run test, finished that and then I got on the field and started practicing hard. I didn't pass it the first time. I passed it the second time. I needed 50 seconds across the board. I got in the second time. Then I got fitted for everything and took care of everything I needed. Now, we're just ready for Auburn.
