Countdown to Kickoff: Sandvig no surprise

If you're surprised that Zac Sandvig is a no. 1 cornerback for Iowa State, don't be. The redshirt freshman from West Des Moines Valley earned a starting job in the spring game back in April and hasn't looked back, maintaining his hold on one of the CB positions as well as becoming ISU's nickel back in five DB sets.

He's got swivel, he's got speed and he's not afraid of contact. But most of all, Sandvig is a tactician when it comes to the fundamental techniques of playing cornerback. Here's a Q & A with Sandvig on his thoughts about being a starter and about how the secondary and the entire defense will fare this season.

What has it been like for you moving up to no. 1 at cornerback?

We're all striving to help the team and take this thing as far as it can go this season. We started six months ago when all of the coaches came in and we've been working our butts off. We've all been striving to become the best player we can possibly be. Everyone is very talented and we're moving in the right direction. It's an honor.

What do you feel like you've done well to be a no. 1?

Just been working as hard as I can and paying real close attention to detail, what the coaches are asking us to. (I am) playing my own position on the defense and not worrying about what the linebackers and defensive line are doing and doing whatever I can to help the team.
