Message from Shields' dad: Thank you Randy

Sam Shields was supposed to be a go-to threat this year.

Instead he's spent almost as much time benched as he has on the field. Coach Randy Shannon kept Shields out for the entire Duke game, the first quarter of the North Carolina game and the first half of last weekend's loss to NC State.

The reason?

Shields' practice habits.

Under Shannon if you don't got hard 100 percent of the time in practice you don't play. Shields is learning that the hard way.

And the strict discipline of Shields has the blessing of an unlikely source: His father.

"(Sam was benched for) just being lazy," Sam Sr. told "You can't be consistent that way. He has to step back and suck it up. Right now he has to step it up and be accountable. I'm pretty sure he'll be aright."
