Kohout pondering an important possibility

The University of Wisconsin football team currently has three early enrollees on campus participating in spring camp.

Quarterback Curt Phillips, offensive lineman Jake Current and tight end Jake Byrne continued the newest trend in college football by graduating a semester early from high school in order to jump-start their college career.

Wednesday night,, caught up with four-star defensive tackle and Badger commitment Jordan Kohout to talk about his latest trip to Madison and the possibility of following suit.

"Actually, I've been talking to Jake Current about that on facebook," said Kohout, who gave his verbal to UW after Wisconsin's junior day. "I'm really considering it a lot at this point because a couple defensive tackles will be graduating. So, I think getting a lot of good work in early could really pay off."

Kohout, a 6-foot-4, 265-pound lineman from Waupun, Wis., was also named to Rivals250 Tuesday.

"I'm pretty excited and I actually just found out today. I was searching the Internet and found out that Shelby Harris and I are both on there," he said. "I'm really excited about that. It kind of brought back memories of me as freshman looking on the Internet at all the football players on the Rivals100 list. It's pretty cool because I always wished I could be like them."

Although he has yet to speak with Harris about the their latest accomplishment, he has informed his future teammate about their elevated status and is excited about the potential of the 2009 recruiting class.

"I didn't get a chance to speak with him directly but I commented on his Facebook page. He's yet to message me back," Kohout said.

"I'm really excited about the potential of this class. It's cool when you have a coach like Bret Bielema and recruiting services like thinking we're good players. It's really an honor. I think Tyler Westphal was the only Rivals250 member in last years recruiting class. It's still pretty early right now, so I'm really excited about that."

Kohout was on hand two weeks ago as Bielema and the Badgers' began spring camp.

"It was really cool to see all the players you watch on TV," he said. "I've always really liked Mike Newkirk because he's a smaller guy but he plays a lot harder. It's really cool to see guys like that."

With four-star offensive tackle Patrick Ward also in attendance, Kohout took some time out of eventful day to share a few words with the Providence Catholic (IL) star.

"Yeah, we talked for a little bit. We watched a few one-on-ones together and stuff like that," Kohout said. "We just talked about football and school, stuff like that."

Kohout, Harris and Ryan Groy make up UW's current 2009 recruiting class.
