Series by series: UW defense against Iowa

IOWA CITY, IOWA - The Wisconsin defense has been under major pressure during the four-game Badger losing streak. In total, the UW offense has only managed three touchdowns over the past nine quarters of play.

With that said, it is awfully difficult for a defense to keep a team in the game when the offense is putrid. In its 38-16 loss to Iowa, the Badger defense suffered a similar fate.

The following is a look back at UW's defensive series:

First quarter:

Defensive series No. 1: Started on Iowa 30 yard line following Brad Nortman punt.
Plays: 7
Yards given up: 70
Result: Touchdown (7-0 Iowa)

Worst play: UW struggled the entire drive. They gave up plays of 13, 11, and 17 yards before Shonn Greene scored his first of four touchdowns from 12 yards out.

Defensive series No. 2: Started on Iowa 20 following Nortman punt.
Plays: 7
Yards given up: 24
Result: 37-yard Ryan Donahue punt.

Best play: After Iowa moved the ball 26 yards on their first four plays of the drive, the Badger defense locked down. On third and 20, UW held Greene 12 yards shy of the first down on a draw, forcing the punt.

Second quarter:

Defensive series No. 3: Started on Iowa 23 yard line following Nortman punt.
Plays: 4
Yards: 30
Result: 34-yard Donohue punt.

Best play: On third and five, Iowa stretched the field and went deep to David Johnson-Koulianos. However, Allen Langford broke up the pass at the last second to force the punt.

Defensive series No. 4: Started on Iowa 43 yard line following Nortman punt.
Plays: 2
Yards: 57

Defensive series No. 5: Started on Iowa 16 yard line following Nortman punt.
Plays: 3
Yards given up: 7
Result: 39-yard Donahue punt.

Best play: On third and seven, Iowa quarterback Ricky Stanzi threw to Trey Stross along the sideline. UW safety Chris Maragos pushed him out-of-bounds before he could get the first down.

Defensive series No. 6: Started on Iowa 32 yard line following kickoff. (14-3 Iowa)
Plays: 3
Yards given up: 9
Result: 36-yard Donahue punt.

Best play: UW was calling timeout after every play. On third and four, Stanzi found Wade Leppert in the flat. It looked as though he would pick up the first down, but Dan Moore pushed him out one yard shy.

Third quarter:

Defensive series No. 7: Started Iowa 26 yard line following second half kickoff.
Plays: 3
Yards given up: 8
Result: 38-yard Donahue punt.

Best play: UW emphasized the need to start the second half off with some momentum, well, they did. On third and one, Mike Newkirk exploded into the backfield and drilled Greene before he could get back to the line of scrimmage, forcing the punt.

Defensive series No. 8: Started on Iowa 20 yard line following kickoff. (14-6 Iowa)
Plays: 3
Yards given up: 2
Result: 33-yard Donahue punt.

Best play: Since Aaron Henry is redshirting this season, the Badgers have not blitzed many corners. However, on third and eight, Aubrey Pleasant came free on a blitz and rushed Stanzi's incomplete pass.

Defensive series No. 9: Started on Iowa 33 yard line following kickoff. (14-9 Iowa)
Plays: 3
Yards given up: 67
Result: 52-yard Green touchdown run. (21-9 Iowa)

Worst play: The momentum seemed to be going in Wisconsin's favor, but following a roughing the passer penalty on Jonathan Casillas the pendulum quickly swung back to Iowa. Greene took the option draw and sidestepped one Badger defender and outran the rest for this third touchdown of the day.

Defensive series No. 10: Started on UW 33 yard line following blocked Nortman punt.
Plays: 4
Yards given up: 33
Result: 16-yard Allen Reisner touchdown catch. (28-9 Iowa)
