Chronicling Beckum's career: 2006
MADISON, Wis. - There is no doubt Travis Beckum will go down as one of Wisconsin's finest football players. After deciding to opt for his senior season instead of a lucrative NFL contract, Beckum wanted to prove he was or could be better than he had previously shown.
That is what makes the injury he suffered last Saturday, one that has prematurely ended his season, so tough.
The following is a look back at every game of Beckum's career as a tight end beginning with the 2006 season.
Game 1: Wisconsin at Bowling Green
Date: Sept. 2, 2006
Result: 35-14 Badger win
Beckum's statistics: In his first career start at the tight end position, quarterback John Stocco connected with the sophomore three times for 49 yards.
Game 2: Western Illinois at Wisconsin
Date: Sept. 9, 2006
Result: 34-10 Badger win
Beckum's statistics: In a sloppy game against an inferior opponent, the Badgers grinded their way to a blowout win. Beckum finished the contest with two catches for 15 yards.
Game 3: San Diego State at Wisconsin
Date: Sept. 16, 2006
Result: 14-0 Badger win
Beckum's statistics: Beckum's one catch, 21-yard day was a good indication of how the stagnant Badger offense was the entire game against the Aztecs.
Game 4: Wisconsin at Michigan
Date: Sept. 23, 2006
Result: 27-13 Wolverine win
Beckum's statistics: Beckum's five catches for 53 yards was not enough for the Badgers to beat Michigan on the road in the Big Ten opener.
Game 5: Wisconsin at Indiana
Date: Sept. 30, 2006
Result: 52-17 Badger win
Beckum's statistics: The UW offense finally got rolling again after three ho-hum performances. In it, Beckum logged four catches for 70 yards and his first career receiving touchdown.
Game 6: Northwestern at Wisconsin
Date: Oct. 7, 2006
Result: 41-9 Badger win
Beckum's statistics: For the second consecutive week, the Badgers blew out the competition. Though the majority of the offense came on the ground, Beckum hauled in eight passes for 107 yards, his first 100+ receiving day.
Game 7: Minnesota at Wisconsin
Date: Oct. 14, 2006
Result: 48-12 Badger win
Beckum's statistics: In his break out game as a Badger, Beckum scored two touchdowns and had multiple big plays. Already up 28-3 to start the third quarter, Stocco found Beckum on back-to-back plays for 41 and 40-yard gains and a quick hitting touchdown drive. UW went on to roll the Gophers on homecoming.
Game 8: Wisconsin at Purdue
Date: Oct. 21, 2006
Result: 24-3 Badger win
Beckum's statistics: In what was dubbed one of UW's tougher opponents of the season, the Badgers went down to Purdue and stifled their high-scoring offensive attack. Beckum finished the game with four receptions for 68 yards.
Game 9: Illinois at Wisconsin
Date: Oct. 28, 2006
Result: 30-24 Badger win
Beckum's statistics: A young and upstart Illinois squad arrived to Camp Randall on fire. They jumped out to a 21-3 lead before UW rallied and escaped with a 30-24 win. Beckum finished the game with five catches for 76 yards.
Game 10: Penn State at Wisconsin
Date: Nov. 4, 2006
Result: 13-3 Badger win
Beckum's statistics: In what proved to be the overriding theme to the 2006 season, the UW defense was yet again stout. UW held Penn State to only three points and claimed their sixth consecutive win. Beckum was held in check though, finishing the game with six catches for 39 yards.
Game 11: Wisconsin at Iowa
Date: Nov. 11, 2006
Result: 24-21 Badger win
Beckum's statistics: In Tyler Donovan's first career start, he led the Badgers to an impressive 24-21 win and UW's second 10-win regular season team in school history. Beckum helped with an eight catch, 70-yard performance and a touchdown.
Game 12: Buffalo at Wisconsin
Date: Nov. 18, 2006
Result: 35-3 Badger win
Beckum's statistics: On senior day at Camp Randall, the Badger offense was unable to achieve much in the first half. However, in the second half they were provided a spark from Beckum's five-catch, 135-yard day.
Game 13: Capital One Bowl: Wisconsin vs. Arkansas
Date: Jan. 1, 2007
Result: 17-14 Badger win
Beckum's statistics: In what many considered to be an upset, the Badgers, and Beckum, secured their place as the winningest team in UW history with a 17-14 win over the Razorbacks. Beckum scored a crucial touchdown in the bowl and finished with five receptions for 81 yards.
