Series by series: UW defense against Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Overall, the Wisconsin defense may have played its best game of the season against Indiana during UW's 55-20 blowout win. Twice, the Hoosiers took over in Badger territory after two, what-could-have-been, costly turnovers. But the Badger defense remained stout and held IU to only 20 points, and shut them out in the second half.

The following is a look back at every UW defensive series during Saturday's game:

First quarter:

Defensive series No. 1: Started on Indiana 28 yard line following kickoff. (7-0 Wisconsin)
Plays: 11
Yards given up: 47
Result: 42-yard Austin Starr field goal. (7-3 Wisconsin)

Key play: With the Hoosiers facing a third and 10 situation, the Badger defense buckled down and forced Ben Chappell into throwing an incomplete pass. However, senior rush end Matthew Shaughnessy was whistled for roughing the passer, giving IU a first down that led to a field goal.

Defensive series No. 2: Started on Indiana 33 yard line following kickoff. (14-3 Wisconsin)
Plays: 5
Yards given up: 67
Result: 43-yard Andrew Means receiving touchdown. (14-10 Wisconsin)

Key play: Chappell just got rid of the ball before Shaughnessy brought him down for what would have set up third and 10. But, Chappell delivered a floater on the money to Means who was wide open downfield after some sort of blown coverage occurred in the Badger secondary.

Defensive series No. 3: Started on Wisconsin 16 yard line following fumble recovery.
Plays: 4
Yards given up: 0
Result: 33-yard Starr field goal. (14-13 Wisconsin)

Second quarter:

Defensive series No. 4: Started on Wisconsin 39 yard line following Dustin Sherer interception.
Plays: 4
Yards given up: 3

Defensive series No. 6: Started on Indiana 17 yard line following Brad Nortman punt.
Plays: 5
Yards given up: 30
Result: 40-yard Chris Hagerup punt.

Key play: On Hagerup's punt, David Gilreath took his eye off the ball at the last second. He muffed the ball and after it took a perfect bounce to IU's gunner, the Hoosiers started at the Badger 15 yard line poised to take the lead before halftime.

Plays: 1
Yards given up: 11
