Pivotal weekend for USC recruiting

Recruiting can be full of hyperbola, but this weekend, USC will play host to one of the biggest official visit events in the country.

Two five-star recruits and five four-star recruits are expected to arrive on campus Friday for a pivotal 48 hours of recruiting. The Trojans will look to gain new commitment, but also solidify preexisting pledges.

James Boyd - Four-star - Defensive End

Background: Boyd made a verbal commitment in late June to the Trojans. At that time, he had come off an impressive Rising Stars Camp and was widely assumed to be a future defensive lineman for Pete Carroll & Co. However, after his senior season where he threw for over 4,200 yards and 44 touchdowns playing quarterback for L.A. Jordan, Boyd may have reconsidered his future. With the recent verbal commitment of Kevin Greene, and Matt Barkley's solid verbal, both positions that Boyd would play appear to be solidified. Boyd is regarded as one of the country's most athletic and versatile players, though, so his future position is far from limited.

Boyd on USC: "When I walked down the tunnel at The Coliseum, I told myself that I can see myself playing there in that stadium in front of those fans," Boyd said. "I've watched USC since I was little. Now I get a chance to play for a Hall of Fame coach in Pete Carroll."

What to Expect: It will be critical this weekend for Boyd to have his future role with the Trojans hashed out. He mentioned that Nick Holt was a big part of his recruitment, so it will also be vital for Jethro Franklin to build the same relationship with Boyd. It's unlikely that Boyd will be offered a chance to play quarterback at USC; with that said, at this point Boyd's future school will most likely depend on the position he wants to play at the next level.
