Byers high on UW after offer comes in

Entering his second full season as tight ends coach at the University of Wisconsin, Joe Rudolph has been busy probing the state of Ohio.

In 2009, Rudolph was able to lure four players way from the Buckeye State, a list that included Pat Muldoon, Brian Wozniak, Chris Borland and Jeff Duckworth.

Monday night, BadgerBlitz.com caught up with one of Rudolph's 2010 targets, Cody Byers, to discuss his recent offer from the Badgers.

"Yes, sir, that's correct," stated the 6-foot-3, 195-pounder. "I received an e-mail from Coach Rudolph and he's actually coming to my school on Friday. He's called my coach as well, and told him that Wisconsin was going to offer me a scholarship.

"Coach Rudolph has been great. Our contact has mainly been through e-mail so far throughout the process."

Byers, who hails from Centerville (Ohio) Archbishop Alter, is a former teammate of Borland.

"We are actually on spring break right now, so I haven't had a chance to speak with Chris about the offer," Byers said. "I'm sure he's excited. Obviously he's a great player, too. I'm looking forward to an opportunity to see the school and what it has to offer."

Admittedly grateful from the early attention, Byers feels that two programs presently stand out. Those two schools: Wisconsin and West Virginia, will both be recruiting him as an outside linebacker.

"Right now the Wisconsin offer is at the top of the list, them and West Virginia," he said. "Those are the two schools I've watched the most. I've been to West Virginia. I'm not saying they are ahead of Wisconsin, but I've been able to check out their program first hand.

"I plan on checking out Wisconsin to see what they have to offer. I'm looking forward to it. That goes for all the other schools who have offered me a scholarship.

Along with UW, Byers has offers from Ohio, West Virginia and Louisville. Other schools showing strong interest are Northwestern, Iowa, Illinois, Syracuse, Connecticut, Pittsburg, Cincinnati, Bowling Green, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Kentucky, Akron and Ball State.

Wisconsin currently has one verbal commitment in its 2010 class: Konrad Zagzebski.
