Confident Kodi ready for scrimmage

Kodi Burns is no stranger to quarterback competitions.

As a freshman in 2007, he supplanted Blake Field as the backup and eventually played in nine games, starting one over senior Brandon Cox.

He was part of a close battle in 2008, splitting snaps with Chris Todd to open the season, playing as a backup for the next five games before taking over as the starter for the final six.

Now, Burns finds himself in the midst of his third two-a-day battle, this time with three other quarterbacks vying for the position. Todd is back from shoulder surgery that kept him out of spring practice. Junior Neil Caudle has resurrected his career after playing in just three games in his first three years on the Plains.

And AU added talented true freshman Tyrik Rollison to the mix this summer.

One or possibly two of the contenders could be eliminated from the race shortly after Tuesday night's first scrimmage of the fall. But if Burns is feeling any pressure, he's not showing it.

The veteran of three quarterback competitions and 19 career games as been there, done that.

"As a quarterback you can't worry about pressure at all, whether it's in a game or a competition, you do your best," Burns said. "I'm just blessed to have this opportunity to play for coach Malzahn as well as this new staff. Just compete and have fun with it."

While he recognizes the importance of the scrimmage, Burns is making a point not to place too much emphasis on it.
