VIDEO: Dantonio on Cousins, starters, Montana St.
EAST LANSING - Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio ended the suspense by naming former Holland Christian star Kirk Cousins the starting quarterback over Keith Nichol for the opener of the 2009 season against Montana State.
Dantonio said that choosing between Nichol and Cousins was the hardest decision he had made during his coaching career in regard to naming a starter.
Both players will play against Montana State and whether Cousins remains the starter or Nichol surpasses him will be determined on the field of play.
On the defensive line, Colin Neely has been named the starter at defensive end ahead of David Rolf while Kevin Pickelman will be the starter at defensive tackle ahead of Jerel Worthy.
Dantonio indicated that former Brother Rice standout Caulton Ray would start in a backfield rotation that also includes true freshmen Larry Caper and Edwin Baker.
Bumps and bruises with some veterans have teammates listed on the depth chart ahead of them or with co first-string status.
D.J. Young is listed as the co first-string left tackle with Rocco Cironi and B.J. Cunningham and Mark Dell.
Caper, Baker, Chris Norman] and [db]Dion Sims are four freshmen Dantonio said will see playing time against Montana State.
