Basketball returns with a win

Florida State led by as many as 17 points in the second half, but narrowly defeated Georgia State 62-55 in the first game since the break for semester exams on Dec. 6.

Center Solomon Alabi led all scorers with 22 points, a new career-high. The redshirt sophomore also had six blocks tying a career-high.

The only other Seminole in double figures was freshman guard Michael Snaer with 10 points. Snaer has now scored in double figures in three consecutive games.

As a team, Florida State (8-2) shot 21-for-43 (48.8%) from the field but were just 3-for-11 (27.3 %) from 3-point range. At the line, FSU shot 17-for-29 (58.6%). The 'Noles again had turnover issues giving it up 19 times to Georgia State (5-6).

"Obviously this is one of those games that would give me gray hairs if I had any," Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton said. "I thought that the game was under control - the score was like 25-8 at one time. We mixed our defenses up because we wanted to go to a different lineup and we thought it would be better suited for us as we sought to utilize our length and go to our zone. We extended the lead a little bit and came back with some subs and extended the lead a little more. At that time I thought we lost our offensive rhythm."

The Seminoles held just a 30-24 lead at the half. Following a basket by Xavier Gibson with 8:36 remaining in the half, the Seminoles scored just one more basket from the floor before heading to the locker room.

"It seems that one of the things we are fighting with this team is that we have not totally committed ourselves to executing within a system," Hamilton said. "We feel that we have a system that we have been familiar with for a number of years, but we have not been consistent with our execution in those areas. It's not necessarily a selfish thing, I wouldn't say that, it's been poor decisions."

Georgia State was led by Joe Dukes, who had 22 points on the evening.

Florida State returns to action on Thursday night when they host the Auburn Tigers at 7:00 p.m.
