Eagles hold major scrimmage at Clinton High
CLINTON, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team went through a two and a half hour scrimmage here Wednesday evening at Arrow Stadium on the Clinton High School campus.
It was the second major scrimmage for the Golden Eagles, after taking their first one to Ocean Springs High earlier this month.
A couple things stood out for third-year Southern Miss coach Larry Fedora on what he believes his team needs to work on before its spring game next Saturday at 6 p.m.
"The two things that stood out were that the offense put the ball on the ground too many times and the defense gave up too many explosive plays," Fedora said.
Still, Fedora liked the improvement of the team from the first scrimmage almost two weeks ago.
"There were really some good things (to come out of this scrimmage)," Fedora added. "This was a better scrimmage than we had in Ocean Springs. The guys played harder and they made a lot less mental mistakes."
Rising senior V.J. Floyd led the Golden Eagles on the ground with 63 yards on 13 carries and a pair of rushing scores, while fellow senior Martevious Young added 25-of-41 passing for 219 yards, which included a 25-yard scoring toss to William Spight who made a nice diving catch in the end zone. Spight added seven catches for 72 yards and a score
Young also threw a TD throw to Francisco Llanos for 34 yards as he tallied four receptions for 59 yards.
On defense, Korey Williams registered an interception while David Boyce tallied two fumble recoveries and a sack. Cordarro Law racked up a safety and a sack. Octavius Thomas also collected a fumble recovery.
A large contingent of Golden Eagle fans enjoyed the free scrimmage as they populated the home side stands as well as all along the sideline on the fence..
"It was great the way Clinton responded," Fedora said as the trip was the fourth Southern Miss has done over the last two spring seasons.
The Golden Eagles return to the practice field Friday morning.
