FSU/UF baseball preview

Florida State (25-7) and Florida (23-8) square-off in the fourth and final meeting of the regular season on Tuesday evening in Tallahassee. FSU leads the all-time series 118-96-1, while the Seminoles have held the upper hand at home posting an all-time record of 69-37-1. Florida State has taken two of three from the Gators in 2010.

Tuesday marks the 216th meeting between Florida State and Florida as the Noles are 22-15 over the last 37 games. Last year's game in Tallahassee went in favor of the Gators as UF jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after the first inning and never looked back cruising to a 10-2 victory. Florida starter Greg Larson gave up just one hit and kept the Noles scoreless over 4.1 innings of work. Avery Barnes led all players with four hits, while Mike McGee paced the Seminoles with two hits. Tommy Oravetz accounted for both Florida State runs as he connected on a two-run blast in the seventh to prevent the shutout.

Depending on what poll you use, Tuesday's showdown will feature a meeting between two top 10 teams for the fourth time this year. The Noles and Gators rank 6th & 7th, respectively in Baseball America's top 25 poll and 8th and 9th, respectively by the NCBWA. FSU is ranked in the top 10 in all five major polls.

Tyler Holt, a product of Gainesville, has faired well against the Gators over his career hitting .425 (17-for-40) in 10 games. Holt has registered 11 runs, seven walks, three RBI and is 5-for-6 in the stolen base category.

Florida State will then turn around to face Jacksonville on Wednesday, April 14 on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium. First pitch against the Dolphins is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. In a series dating back to 1960, Florida State and Jacksonville square-off in the second of three meetings in 2010. The Seminoles lead the all-time series 114-36, while maintaining a mark of 74-11 in games played on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium.

In the first meeting back on March 8, FSU took a no-hitter into the ninth only to see Alex Martinez single back up the middle off reliever Tyler Everett to leadoff the inning. Three Seminole pitchers combined for the one-hit, 2-0 victory over JU. Making his first collegiate start in the field, Sean Gilmartin recorded his first multi-hit game of his career going 2-for-4 while driving in what ended up being the game-winner with an RBI single in the fifth.
