Franklinton High quarterback Terrance Magee and O. Perry Walker defensive tackle Anthony Johnson played major roles in helping their teams make deep runs into the state playoffs.

Those contributions have been recognized accordingly on the Class 4A All-State football team chosen by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Johnson has been selected as the Outstanding Defensive Player for a second consecutive year, while Magee was chosen as the Outstanding Offensive Player. Jabbar Juluke of Karr has been named Class 4A Coach of the Year.

In addition to being a repeat All-State selection, Johnson, 6-foot-3, 285 pounds, is a two-time Defensive Player of the Year in Metro New Orleans and in District 10-4A who anchored an O. Perry Walker defense that carried the Chargers to just the third state semifinals appearance in school history.

As a senior, Johnson averaged 10 tackles a game, particularly impressive totals for an interior lineman, who recorded 129 tackles, 31 tackles for losses and 17.5 sacks in addition to forcing seven fumbles, intercepting one pass and recording a safety. A four-time All-District selection and LSU commitment, Johnson finished with 79 career sacks.

The Chargers advanced to the playoffs as a District 10-4A wild card and then beat past Minden, Salmen and Bastrop in the playoffs before falling to Franklinton in the semifinals to finish 9-4.
Although he played quarterback at Franklinton, Magee was chosen to the All-State team at the athlete position. The Demons' 5-foot-10, 205-pound senior was a three-year starter at quarterback who directed Franklinton to the Washington Parish school's first state football championship.

In doing so, Magee accounted for 4,004 yards and 54 touchdowns with his passing and running as Franklinton went undefeated against in-state competition and won 14 straight games following a season-opening loss at Abilene, Texas, High School. The Demons' 14 victories equaled the school single-season record set by Magee and the 2009 team that finished as Class 4A state runner-ups.

The Demons culminated their magical season with a 34-28 overtime victory against Karr in the State Farm LHSAA Prep Classic in which Magee was chosen as Franklinton's Outstanding Player for the game. A LSU commitment, Magee also is a two-time District 9-4A Offensive Player of the Year.

As a senior, Magee averaged 8.8 yards per attempt as a runner and passer and completed 159 of 255 passes for 2,634 yards and 35 touchdowns with just three interceptions. Magee also rushed for 1,370 yards and 19 touchdowns on 161 attempts.

The 38-year-old Juluke directed Karr to its finest season in over a decade. The Cougars won the District 10-4A championship for the third time in four seasons and then advanced to the state finals for the first time since 1999. Karr's district title was the fifth it has won or shared in seven seasons under Juluke, a former St. Augustine defensive back, who also was a college player at Tulane and Southern.

The Cougars earned the state's No. 1 seed in Class 4A with a 9-1 regular-season record and won 13 straight games in reaching the LHSAA State Farm Prep Classic opposite Franklinton. The 13 consecutive wins were the second most in Karr history. The Cougars compiled a 24-4 record over the past two seasons that included a 2009 advance to the state quarterfinals.

Joining Johnson on the defensive line are Timothy Johnson of Karr, Tyler Porter of Northside and Demarcus Hodge of Neville.

The linebackers are Matthew Bailey of Karr, Seth Ward of Vandebilt Catholic, Jake Miller of Teurlings Catholic and Ronnie Wheeler of Franklinton.

The four players chosen at defensive back are returning All-Stater Devon White of McDonogh 35, Cortez Johnson of O. Perry Walker, Ellis Carey of Helen Cox and Will LeBlanc of Cecilia.

Offensively, the other skill players besides Franklinton's Magee are quarterback Dak Prescott of Haughton, running backs Josh Robinson of Franklinton, Dillon Berlin of St. Louis Catholic and Jalen Richard of Peabody and wide receivers Jarvis Landry of Lutcher, Jamal Robinson of Salmen and Damon Gladney of Haughton. An extra wide receiver was chosen in lieu of a tight end.

The offensive line is manned by Xavier Jefferson of Franklinton, Derek Edinburgh of Karr, Kenneth Santa Maria of McDonogh 35, Luke Spinella of Vandebilt Catholic and William Cowen of Peabody.

St. Louis Catholic swept the two kicking specialists positions with senior Kris Albarado being chosen as a punter and junior Harrison Flynt being named the place-kicker.

Levander Liggins of Leesville is the kick return specialist.
Like O. Perry Walker's Johnson and McDonogh 35's White, Landry of Lutcher, Robinson and Jefferson of Franklinton, Albarado of St. Louis are repeat selections from 2009.
