State of the position: Quarterback

With the 2010 season behind NC State, it's only natural to take a look back at the year and analyze the roster. The Wolfpacker does just that, taking a position-by-position look at the squad, and figuring out what went right and wrong in 2009, and how the future shapes up. We start with the all important quarterback position.

Season Breakdown

Preseason spin
Before this season started many had NC State redshirt junior quarterback Russell Wilson as a potential All-ACC candidate, although he was not receiving near as much hype as the supposed Heisman hopeful from Florida State, Christian Ponder. The depth chart had Wilson backed up by the highly heralded redshirt sophomore Mike Glennon, who impressed in the 2010 spring game.

Reality
For the third straight season, Wilson did his thing. He completed 308 of 527 passes for 3,568 yards and 28 touchdowns, although he also tossed 14 interceptions. Wilson ran 143 times for 435 yards and team-high nine touchdowns.

Wilson made yet another assault on the record book. He tied Philip Rivers for the single-season school record in touchdown responsibility with 37, and Wilson's passing yards, total yards and completions were second-highest ever for a year. Wilson set a new school record for pass attempts in a season as well. He would be named second-team All-ACC for his efforts.

Glennon played in spot action in three wins and completed 9 of 13 passes for 78 yards while running once for three yards.

Analyzing Recruiting Trend

The Supposed Foundation
By the foundation, we mean high school players that were signed in the Classes of 2006, 2007 and 2008 that have been in the program for at least three years. We did not include junior college recruits or major college transfers in this list.

Justin Burke, Class of 2006
Russell Wilson, Class of 2007
Mike Glennon, Class of 2008

Analysis: Evaluating quarterbacks successfully is crucial in college football, and it appears that for at least two out of three years NC State has done a very good job. They obviously struck gold in Wilson, and Glennon would probably be starting by now for many teams across the country.

It could be argued that State did a fairly decent job all three years in that span. Burke finished fifth in a five-way battle for the starting quarterback job at NC State in 2008 and transferred to Louisville. He played in seven games this year and posted impressive statistics, completing 75 of 129 passes for 790 yards and 10 touchdowns with just three picks. In two years for the Cardinals, Burke played in 11 games, almost a full schedule, and completed 124 of 226 passes for 1,444 yards and 13 touchdowns with eight picks.

The Future?
The future are high school players that signed in 2009 and 2010 as well as non-binding verbal commitments from the 2011 class.

Tyler Brosius, Class of 2010
Brian Taylor, Class of 2011

Analysis: NC State quarterback recruiting over the past three years took a hit when Everett Proctor, signed from the 2009 class, hurt his throwing shoulder and was forced to move to safety. That left Brosius as the third scholarship quarterback on the roster last season. Brosius, who switched his commitment from Virginia to NC State during the recruiting process, reportedly impressed while working with the scout team and redshirting this fall.

Taylor had early offers from Clemson, East Carolina and North Carolina, but he held out and waited for an NC State offer that finally came this past summer. Taylor quickly accepted. He's a good athlete with some size (6-foot-2, 195 pounds) and has been a productive quarterback and a winner at Harnett Central High in Angier, N.C.

State Of The Position

There are a lot of question marks at this position entering the offseason. First and foremost, will Wilson return for his fifth-year senior season, and following Wilson's decision, what will Glennon decide to do. One of them will likely be starting at quarterback next season for the Pack, but will both of them still be on the roster? That has yet to be decided.

This is also a very important recruiting cycle for the Pack at the quarterback position. Look for NC State to make it an important priority on the recruiting trail.
