McDonald undergoes knee surgery

CHAPEL HILL - University of North Carolina men's basketball guard Leslie McDonald underwent meniscus repair and reconstructive surgery on his right anterior cruciate ligament on Wednesday morning.

Team orthopaedist Dr. Alex Creighton performed the surgery at UNC Hospitals, and McDonald's recovery time is to be determined.

"I'm pleased with how it went this morning," Creighton said on Wednesday evening. "Everything went well and as we hoped it would. Leslie is doing well and we expect a full recovery."

McDonald tore his right ACL on July 14 in a summer league game in Durham. He was second on the UNC team last season with 51 three-point field goals and averaged 7.0 points per game.

He scored in double figures 10 times last year, including a career-high 17 against Long Beach State.

"I just hate this for Leslie and his family," UNC head coach Roy Williams said the day after McDonald suffered the injury last month.

"He's worked so hard this off-season and he told me he was really playing well. We'll certainly support him as he works to get back on the floor, but we will miss his play on both ends of the court."
