SDSU Camp Notes: Day Three

San Diego State put on the shoulder pads for the first time this camp on Wednesday and AztecSportsReport.com was there to get the scoop. Check out the Camp Notes from Day Three.

Aztecs add a receiver

Head coach Rocky Long and the rest of SDSU's coaching staff knew they would likely need to add a junior college receiver to this year's team because of the severe lack of experience at the position.

On Wednesday, Long and the Aztecs got their guy.

Receiver Aldodius "AC" Colquitt transferred from Golden West Junior College and joined SDSU's practice on Wednesday night, sporting the No. 42.

"He was a player that we found in the spring during the spring evaluation period," Long said. "We think he's a pretty good player."

Long said he and his staff found Colquitt at a camp back in June. He's a 6-foot, 185-pound wideout who's expected to compete for the Aztecs' starting receiver gig.

Because of NCAA rules, he has to have two days of helmets only before he can join the rest of the Aztecs who are already in shoulder pads. SDSU will be in full pads on Friday.

Gibbs' prognosis looking gloom

Long said on Wednesday night defensive end Larry Gibbs, who was projected to be the starter this season, might not be ready for the first game of the year. Gibbs broke his foot earlier this year and Long said he'll be in a boot for at least two more weeks.

"It's not healing very well," Long said.

With Gibbs out, Long said 6-foot-1, 245-pound defensive lineman Jordan Thomas would be the starter.

Youth period

In order to get some of the younger guys more reps at practice, Long has implemented "youth period."

Half an hour before practice starts at 7 p.m., freshmen and redshirt freshmen have a low-key, less-intense 11-on-11 period. Long hopes the extra time on the field will give them a better chance at playing this season.

The Aztecs plan on having these sessions until Friday.

Short Shots

Long said the energy and enthusiasm was great on Wednesday, but "there were so many mental errors out there, it was ridiculous." Long blamed the shoulder pads for the mistakes: "They're so wound up and so excited about running into each other, they kind of forget their assignment and what they're doing sometimes." Wednesday was the first time the Aztecs wore shoulder pads this camp. … Redshirt freshman Adam Dingwell has received most of the snaps at backup quarterback this camp. He and Ryne Clark were listed as Lindley's backup on the post-spring depth chart. … Like Lindley, running back Ronnie Hillman will sport a new helmet this year. He said he got the new one because his old one popped off so much last season.
