Tech starts two-a-days

RUSTON, La. - Despite a couple of false starts because of lightning in the area, Louisiana Tech's football team put its first two-a-day practices in the books Saturday after working out in the morning and evening at Joe Aillet Stadium.

The team went through an hour practice in the morning and was set for a 6 p.m. practice in the evening but two different lightning strikes in the area forced a 30 minute delay before the team finally worked through the full evening practice.

"We had a long day today with two practices," Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Dykes said. "I thought our guys did a good job of responding. [In the evening] we had to start and stop practice and change our schedule because we had some lightning in the area. We were a little slow starting coming out of the locker room but I thought both sides picked it up in the end. Both sides of the ball did some good things so I was encouraged by that."

In Saturday's evening practice, the coaching staff changed the practice up by giving Colby Cameron a rest after six hard practices, allowing Nick Isham to run with the first team players and Taylor Burch to get some reps with the second team offense.

"We just wanted to get him [Taylor Burch] some more work," Dykes explained. "Our guys throw a lot so we wanted to give Colby [Cameron] a rest. It was good to give Taylor some work and we will just keep evaluating him and see where he fits in the scheme of things with the quarterbacks."

The conclusion of the first two-a-day is also nearing the end of the first week in camp. The team will practice Sunday evening following Fan Fest at the Thomas Assembly Center before starting the second week of fall camp.

"We just need to keep getting better," Dykes said about entering the second week of camp. "We need to keep grinding and the big thing for us is to not waste any practices. We have to come out and get better every single day and continue to improve."

Fans have the chance to meet and greet the players and coaches Sunday from 1-3 p.m. at the Thomas Assembly Center in the school's annual Fan Fest event.
