Holgorsen's Take Fall Camp

West Virginia Head Coach Dana Holgorsen talked defensive effort, position battles and another new face at quarterback during his press conference Tuesday evening.

The defense had their best day Monday evening, showing great effort and intensity according to the head man.

"They were really flying around and making plays and looked good. Had a lot of energy and enthusiasm," Holgorsen said.

And while there are still some mistakes schematic wise and with running to the ball, the unit has progressed as a whole over the past couple days.

"You've got to have a little bit of an edge to be good on defense," he said.

On the defensive side, Najee Goode, Keith Tandy, Bruce Irvin, Jorge Wright and Terence Garvin were all mentioned as players that have played well. While, along the defensive line the Mountaineers continue to build depth with the emergence of players such as Will Clarke and Shaq Rowell.

"It's a lot better than where we were in the spring," Holgorsen said.

The head coach commented that he was very pleased with the chemistry of the coaching staff.

"This staff is pretty united. We're all getting to know each other pretty good. Within us offensively, but also with offensively and defensively ..." he said. "Right now I couldn't be happier with how everybody is meshing, getting along and getting on the same page."

In one of the ongoing position battles Pat Eger has taken the lead over Quinton Spain for the starting right tackle spot, but Holgorsen was quick to point out that this is only practice 13.

"That's something we will continue to work on and evaluate and just keep repping those guys," he said.

As for the other positional battles, Holgorsen indicated that while he would like to have those issues cleared up sooner rather than later, some of them could even linger into the season.

"It's just a deal where you've got to keep evaluating them," he said.

On the injury front, only one new injury to report with offensive lineman John Bassler who sustained a concussion and stinger.

Finally, Michael Burchett joined the team and began practicing Tuesday after coming over from Kentucky as a non-recruited walk-on and should provide depth during practice.

"He gives us another good arm and had a very good high school career," Holgorsen said.
