Irish land Philly shooter
It's not uncommon for prospects to talk about wanting to make a commitment before the season starts.
With the recruiting run it has been on over the last month or so it appears the Notre Dame basketball program has been operating along the same lines. The Irish landed junior shooting guard Steve Vasturia on Monday, giving them three new commitments since mid-September.
"Yes," Vasturia confirmed in a text message. "Notre Dame it is."
The 6-foot-4 sharpshooter from St. Joseph's Prep in Philadelphia joins four-star wing V.J. Beachem as Class of 2013 prospects committed to Notre Dame. Beachem committed Oct. 9.
Just over a month ago four-star power forward Zach Auguste ended his recruitment during an official visit, rounding out the Class of 2012. Four-star wing Cameron Biedscheid and in-state forward Austin Burgett are also in that class.
Vasturia chose Notre Dame over the likes of Boston College, Northwestern, St. Joseph's and Temple. Georgetown, Villanova, Virginia Tech and others were expressing interest.
Irish head coach Mike Brey and his staff pursued Vasturia with vigor after offer a scholarship in early August. They hosted him on an unofficial visit during the South Florida football game weekend then attended open gyms at St. Joseph's Prep on a weekly basis thereafter.
"(Brey) thinks the way I play kind of fits the way they play in their system," Vasturia told Irish Illustrated after landing the offer. "He told me to keep working hard. I'm only gonna be a junior so I've got to keep working hard these next two years."
Check Irish Illustrated later today for more on Notre Dame's newest commitment.
