Quarter by Quarter Breakdown: FSU vs. UM
Quarter by Quarter Breakdown:
Florida State vs. University of Miami
1st Quarter Breakdown:Despite struggling on both sides of the ball, Florida State was able to survive a wild first quarter with a couple of key turnovers. Without a single first down in the quarter, the Seminoles took the lead on a 37-yard field goal from Dustin Hopkins with 0:45 left.
Key Plays:Miami methodically moved down the field with a drive that started at its own 1, picking up six first downs and getting all the way to FSU's 9. But Miami QB Jacory Harris threw an interception in the endzone to end the threat. FSU had a three-and-out on the ensuing possession, but Miami's Travis Benjamin muffed the punt, giving the 'Noles the football at the Miami 27. That led to the FSU field goal.
2nd Quarter Breakdown:
After Miami took a 10-3, the Florida State offense finally got into a rhythm on six-play, 66 yard scoring drive. Christian Green caught two passes for 31 yards on the drive.
On third and seven Jacory Harris connected with Tommy Streeter to keep the scoring drive alive. Harris threw a two-yard TD to Clive Walford.
EJ Manuel answered with a 21-yard touchdown to Rodney Smith.
Greg Reid atoned for an early bad decision in the return game with an 83-yard punt return for a touchdown.
3rd Quarter Breakdown:Florida State's offense woke up in the second half, compiling more yardage on the half's opening drive (83) than it had the entire first half (79). But the Seminoles couldn't convert on a score. FSU did hold Miami to only one first down in the quarter, which came on a roughing the punter penalty late in the quarter.
Key Plays:Florida State continued its struggles on third-and-short, failing to convert from the Miami 1. Instead, the Seminoles had to settle for a 21-yard field goal from Hopkins.
4th Quarter Breakdown:
FSU held off a late Miami charge by recovering an onside kick with less than a minute left in the game. FSU led just one scoring drive in the quarter.
38-yard field goal by Dustin Hopkins.
Mike James had two rushing touchdowns from a 1-yard out for the Hurricanes.
Nick O'Leary recovered the UM onside kick.
