West Salem Titan Alumni Awarded National Honors

Two of the top kids to come through the State in recent years are West Salem Titan Football products.  And they have gone on into the collegiate ranks and done amazing things this season.

The first is 2011 Graduate and QB Brett Smith.  He had brushes with big time collegiate recruitment before landing in Wyoming and that is something that could not have worked out any better.  Starting in all 12 games Brett led the Cowboys to an 8-4 record and passed for 2,495 yards and 18 touchdowns.

The Cowboys stayed close in big games against TCU, Nebraska, and Boise State.  And to think the 6'2" 215 pound athlete was chucking the rock around on the High School fields just a year ago as the leader of the Titans.

Yesterday Smith was honored by CollegeFootballNews.com as a First Team All American for the Freshmen Class earning him the honor as the Nations #1 up and coming underclassmen.

We asked Brett last night if things could have turned out different if his path had led him to a bigger school.

"I think Wyoming was the perfect opportunity for me. And I can't say if things would've been different. All I know is I am happy I ended up here," offered Smith.

Things really could not have worked out any better for him.    Or could it?

"This was part of God's plan and I am living the dream.  It has meant so much...I can truly say I am living the dream," he said thanking all the folks in Oregon who helped him along the way and sending well wishes to the kids playing in today's Oregon 6A Football Championship.

In other news of National relevance Louisiana Tech junior Ryan Allen, also a West Salem graduate, has been named the 2011 winner of the Ray Guy Award, given annually to the nation's best punter. Allen posted a 46.3 average on 78 punts this season, with a nation-leading 37 being downed inside the 20-yard line. Wow that is terrific!

"These kids are awesome representatives of not only our program but of the talent here in Oregon," offered Titan Head Coach Shawn Stanley who is one of the hardest working coaches in the Region and who works very hard year around to make sure his athletes have the opportunity to play after High School.
