VIDEO: Quick hits from the Pac-12 Media Day at Universal

After the formal portion of Pac-12 Media Day, California head coach Jeff Tedford spoke with BearTerritory in a one-on-one interview. You'll have to wait until our premium quarterback positional preview for the more juicy tidbits, but Tedford did speak on a variety of other issues.

More Positional Previews:

  • Going Camping: Wide Receivers
  • Going Camping: Tight Ends
  • Going Camping: Offensive Line
  • Going Camping: Running Backs

As for the rumors swirling around starting quarterback Zach Maynard, Tedford maintains that he has no concerns about his senior signal-caller's eligibility.

"He is good to go," Tedford said. "He's good to go like everybody else on the team that's taking summer school. He's good to go just like everyone else. I don't know where all this stuff's coming from about that. He's fine academically, and like other people on the team, they take summer school and they continue to earn units and so-on and so-forth, as is he. He's good."

Tedford has not yet laid eyes on walk-on quarterback Joey Mahalic, and the 26-year old former Minor League Baseball player will not be with the Bears in camp.

"I don't know anything about him, other than he played pro baseball, he's coming to school, he's going to walk on," Tedford said. "I think it's a good opportunity to have a kid come out who's a little bit older, but I haven't seen him play or anything, so I don't know much about him."

Mahalic approached Cal through quarterbacks coach Marcus Arroyo, who Tedford said will be up in the booth calling plays, much as Eric Kiesau did in 2011.

"Coach Arroyo and Andrew (McGraw) knew that he got in school at our place, and then wanted the opportunity to come out for football, and so we said, 'Sure,'" Tedford said.

Further on Arroyo, Tedford said that basically having two quarterbacks coaches - including himself - is a luxury that allows Arroyo to be up in the box, while he stays on the field fulfilling both head coaching duties and quarterback coaching responsibilities. To say the least, there is a great degree of trust between Tedford and Arroyo.

"I think that's more conducive and more efficient when you're in the same meeting room every day, and you have communication between both of us and the quarterbacks," Tedford said. "We'll talk a lot through that. It'll be an efficient way to do it."

Tedford even touched on the fallout from the Penn State sanctions, saying that it was "possible" that Cal will reach out to some Nittany Lions who are looking to transfer.

"If I could get away from here and make the phone calls I need to make, yeah," Tedford chided. "We're investigating the opportunity, let's put it that way."

Tedford of course cannot comment on the not-yet-signed recruits, but the Bears had offered current Penn State tight end commit Adam Breneman before he pulled the trigger. Sources say that no contact has yet been made between the two parties.

Tedford also confirmed that offensive guard Dominic Galas -- last year's starting center and projected to be this year's starting right guard -- is out for three months after tearing his pectoral muscle off the bone.
