PITTSBURGH -- For a few moments, Virginia Tech's candle flickered.
But as soon as some oxygen made it light up, Pittsburgh quickly snuffed it out.
The Panthers tallied a whopping 537 yards of total offense on a defense touted before the season as one of the best the Hokies have had. Of that total yardage, 254 came on the ground.
It was a pair of running backs that did Virginia Tech in. Senior Ray Graham had 94 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns and caught another for 18 yards. Meanwhile, freshman Rushel Shell was a beast with 157 yards on 23 carries, setting up those Graham touchdowns.
"I thought (Shell) was a hard guy to bring down, but you've gotta run through that guy," coach Frank Beamer said. "But he's a load."
Offensively, the No. 13 Hokies mustered just 324 yards of total offense.
But the mistakes truly killed any chance Virginia Tech had. Junior quarterback Logan Thomas threw a career-high three interceptions, while the Hokies missed a key fourth down play and had some untimely mistakes.
After the game, publisher Jason Stamm broke down the loss and where the Hokies go from here.
