Jeff Driskel post game quotes
POST GAME COVERAGE: Five key plays | Notebook: Floyd, Burton & Debose updated | Notes: Gators show improvement on third downs | Lopsided win | Gators dominate to extend streak to 26 games | Instant Analysis: Shutout victory | Game Day Central
Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel won his fourth-straight start Saturday since becoming the Gators' starting quarterback following their opener against Bowling Green.
Driskel was 18-for-27 for 203 yards, tallying one touchdown and interception. The mobile signal caller also rushed for 50 yards on eight carries.
Here's what the sophomore had to say following Florida's 38-0 shutout.
On UF's run-pass balance…
"Going in we knew that we wanted to be a balanced team. We were going to be hard-nosed, physical team. We're going to try to run it down a team's throats, and that's what we've been doing. They've been loading the box on us and we've still been running hard. When they start loading the box, it's going to open up passing lanes. Plus being able to run is really helping us in the passing game."
On continued improvement...
"Every game is really a building block in the development. The more experience, the more reps you get, the more you're going to learn. I did some nice things today but there's definitely some things that I'm going to have to clean up and I'm going to look back on the film and be like, 'Oh, I should've been to this receiver or should have got the ball out of my hands faster,' but I did a nice job with the opportunities that I got."
On goals during the bye week...
"The whole team, we need to get better as a team. We need to work on the individuals, getting back to basics and fundamentals, and it gives us a chance for our bodies to rest up and be fresh coming in for our next opponent. … I need to get the ball out of my hand faster in only five-man protections. Knowing my reads in certain coverages and just small things like that.
On deciding to stay in the pocket vs. scramble...
"That's definitely just instinct, I'm not watching the rush. If you get caught watching the rush you're never going to be able to find your receiver on time. If you look down at the rush and then look up at the receiver you're going to be late and throwing into bad windows. So that's just definitely an instinctive thing and it's just been something I've been doing the whole time I've been playing the game."
On if he's getting outside by design...
"I think there was only one design sprint out today. Other than that it was just me jumping outside, when I jump outside it's tough for the defenders, they've either got to come up on me or stay with their receiver, so it's kind of tough. It puts them in a bind, so."
On if the team ever talked about winning streak over UK...
"We didn't mention it. That stat didn't really want to make us play any harder or play any different. We were going to come out and prepare like it's another SEC East team. They're just another team in the way of our goal."
On if he feesl like he left some throws out there...
"Definitely left some points out there. There was one to Jordan Reed where I kind of floated it to him instead of putting it on him. That was a chance to score right there. When you have an open receiver like that, you have to hit him."
On the sequence right before halftime...
"You can't take a sack there. We wanted to take a shot, try to squeeze another touchdown in, but you can't take a sack there knowing you don't have any timeouts, so that's on me."
On his reads and progressions...
"I thought I did a decent job, there was a couple where I locked in a little bit instead of really getting through the progression. There were a couple times where I wanted this certain route, and that route is not built for the coverage that they give, so. Like I said earlier, there's a lot of things where we can get better."
On the fumbled snap on the third drive...
"It was just a miscommunication. We've got to be more clear in the huddle. Just a miscommunication. I think he thought I was under center, so luckily I got back on it."
