Thomas On Offensive Improvement

CHAPEL HILL, NC -- For once this season, it's hard to blame the Virginia Tech offense. The Hokies scored on their first drive of the game and finished with 394 yards of total offense in yesterday's 48-34 loss at North Carolina.

It's hard to win though, when your defense allows 533 total yards.

Junior quarterback Logan Thomas seemed to finally find a groove, throwing for 354 yards and a pair of touchdowns. As far as the offense goes, it seemed to be a step forward.

"Our offensive line did a great job," Thomas said. "The defensive line for them is extremely strong, extremely talented, fast. That makes it tough on us, but I thought our line did a terrific job of handling them, giving me time to throw. I can't applaud them any more."

But Thomas didn't get any help from his defense. North Carolina sophomore Giovani Bernard rushed for 262 yards, the most rushing yards the Hokies have ever given up to an opposing individual.

"It's tough," Thomas said. "They've done it for us plenty of times. We understand that we just need to put a complete game together, offense and defense and special teams. If we can do that, we'll be a pretty good team."

Virginia Tech is now 3-3 and 1-1 in the ACC, but if there's any solace it's that the Tar Heels are ineligible for post-season play this season. The Hokies' ACC win also came against division foe Georgia Tech.

"It's the same (mindset) it has been," Thomas said. "We have to come out every week and get better. We still wanna come out here every game, play as hard as we can, get wins and eventually win our side and hopefully get into the ACC championship."

Going forward, at least the Virginia Tech offense might have a bit more confidence. But Thomas knows not just the offense can play positively to turn the season around.

"You saw last week and I thought this week that the offense played great," he said. "And you saw last week that the defense played great. We just need to put it all together. It's either one thing or another thing that's keeping us from winning."

NOTE: We apologize for the poor sound quality. We used the audio system provided by North Carolina, which had some technical difficulty. Another reason why this is free content.
